With a 35 year career and owner of the surprising voice and symbol of the gypsy music, Chico Castillo represents a sound that crosses borders.
In his songs and compositions, his trademark is to mix modern rhythms with the traditional Rumba Flamenca, presenting to the public the experience of world music.
“World Music” is how we can define Chico Castillo’s music, The Gipsy.
José Agustín Luis Castillo (Le Blanc-Mesnil, France; November 3, 1967), known as Chico Castillo “The Gipsy” is a French singer, songwriter and guitarist with Spanish roots.
He was one of the vocalists of the band Gipsy Kings by André Reyes. In his music he fused flamenco and Arabic. He is an honorary ambassador of Unesco since 1998.
Born in an artistic family, at age 23 Chico composed the song Alabina, an important expression of the genre, which shows a fusion of sounds that captivated the world.
With this single, Chico Castillo won platinum and gold records, reaching more than 14 million copies sold worldwide. Alabina was also present in several movies, which brought millions of viewers in Europe that had the opportunity to experience the phenomenon of the gypsy music.
Chico Castillo followed his career and wrote the musical Don Juan along with Felix Gray, winning various awards and selling more than 5 million copies.
One of his songs, Alabina is present in the film that won awards at Cannes “La Verite Si Je Mens”, with this song Chico Castillo sold more than 14 million copies worldwide.
In 2020, Israeli singer Omer Adam invited Chico Castillo to sing together the song “Todo es la música”, a mix of pop and flamenco, with some Arabic sounds.
His most recent production was made together with the Venezuelan Alicia Banquez, it is a version of the song “Mi historia entre tus dedos” by Gianluca Grignani.
